Waye is a traditional Dartmoor hamlet dating from 1320, once comprising of 2 homesteads, Waye Farm and Waye Cottage and a series of barns.  Lower Waye Farm was converted from redundant farm buildings in the 19th century.

Three Hares Barn was built, or possibly rebuilt, and the red brick added, in the 1860’s. The Photo shows Waye Farm before Thee Hares Barn was converted into a holiday cottage

The name ‘Three Hares Barn’ comes from the three hares motif that can be seen on a roof boss in Throwleigh Church.  There is a similar roof boss in Chagford Church and also Widecombe-in-the-Moor Church.  The design is an optical illusion showing 3 hares and 3 ears, but it looks like each hare has 2 ears!  This symbol has links with Eastern Europe and the Far East.
